PITTSBURGH—H. Richard MilnerH. Richard Milner, noted education scholar and director of the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Urban Education, will deliver a free public lecture at noon Feb. 18 titled “Race, Equity, and Urban Education: Issues that Divide.” The talk will take place at Pitt’s Center on Race and Social Problems, School of Social Work Conference Center, 20th floor, Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland.

Milner’s presentation kicks off the center’s Reed Smith Spring 2014 Speaker Series. Registration is not required; lunch will be provided. For more information, visit www.crsp.pitt.edu or call 412-624-7382.

Milner, the Dr. Helen S. Faison Chair of Urban Education in Pitt’s School of Education, has researched many issues related to how urban youth can succeed in school—equity, school funding, curricula, teacher support, and teachers’ connections with the community. His new Handbook of Urban Education (Routledge Press, 2014) provides perspectives on the evolving nature of inner-city education and charts a direction for future work. He also has published five books and more than 70 professional journal articles and book chapters.

Milner joined the Pitt faculty in August. Prior to that, he was associate professor of education and founding director of the Learning, Diversity, and Urban Studies Program in Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development.

The Center on Race and Social Problem’s annual Reed Smith Spring Speaker Series provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community to engage in race-related discussions of mutual interest. Other lectures are planned for March 3, April 8, and April 24.
