Pitt to Host April 6 Film Screening and Discussion with British Filmmaker Phil Grabsky

The film The Boy Who Plays on the Buddhas of Bamiyan depicts life growing up in post-Taliban Afghanistan

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh’s Ford Institute for Human Security will host British filmmaker Phil Grabsky for a free public screening of his film The Boy Who Plays on the Buddhas of Bamiyan (2004) at 4 p.m. April 6 in 1500 Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., Oakland. The film, which depicts life in post-Taliban Afghanistan, won the Golden Hugo for Best Film, Cinematography, and Editing at the 2003 Chicago International Film Festival and the first-place prize at the Valadolid International Film Festival. 

A discussion with Grabsky will follow the screening in addition to viewing a trailer for his follow-up film, The Boy Mir: Ten Years in Afghanistan (2011), which traces the life of the boy in the first film as he becomes an adult. The Boy Mir was recently awarded Best Documentary Film at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Grabsky will return to screen that film at Pitt in the fall of 2011.
