University of Pittsburgh Announces Lineup of Legendary Jazz Musicians for 31st Annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert

PITTSBURGH—Legendary jazz musicians from around the world will gather on the University of Pittsburgh campus Oct. 30–Nov. 3 for the 31st Annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert. Scheduled to perform are musical greats Jon Faddis, trumpet; Cecil Bridgewater, trumpet; Jackie McLean, saxophone; James Moody, saxophone; Joe Lovano, saxophone; Mark Whitfield, guitar; David Baker, cello; Kirk Lightsey, piano; Abraham Laboriel, bass; Terri Lynne Carrington, drums; and Nathan Davis, saxophones. This is the first year Bridgewater, Lovano, Whitfield, and Baker have participated in the annual event.

In keeping with tradition, the guest performers will conduct daytime on-campus seminars, free and open to the public; conduct mini-clinics for students at area schools; and give free performances at other community venues. Two free on-campus evening lectures on the history and business of jazz will take place Oct. 30 and Nov. 1. The week will culminate at 8 p.m. Nov. 3 with a concert at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. Concert tickets are $18 general admission and $8 for students with a valid Pitt I.D. Tickets will be on sale beginning Oct. 1 through any TicketMaster location, by phone at 412/323-1919, online at www.ticketmaster.com, and at the William Pitt Union box office.

Founded in 1970 by Pitt Jazz Studies Director Nathan Davis, the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert was the first academic large-scale jazz seminar in the country to bring together both internationally renowned and aspiring musicians. It is the longest-running event of its kind in the United States.
