LUNCHEON SET FOR PITT'S AFRICAN HERITAGE CLASSROOM
PITTSBURGH, May 12 -- The Nationality Rooms Program's African Heritage Classroom Committee will host a Sankofa luncheon on Saturday, June 3, at 1 p.m., in the University of Pittsburgh William Pitt Union Ballroom, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland.
"Celebrating the Past, Acknowledging the Present, and Reaching Toward Tomorrow," is the luncheon theme depicted by African Sankofa birds showing one bird looking backward and the other looking forward. Committee member Florence Williams, appointed by African Heritage Classroom Committee Chairman Andrew Hawes, will chair the luncheon.
The African Heritage Classroom, one of 26 Nationality Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning, is an intercultural room representing the entire African continent. Walter Worthington and Nancy Lee, both deceased, worked diligently with others to create the room, which was dedicated on Dec. 17, 1989.
The committee awards an annual scholarship to a Pitt student for summer study in an African Country. Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit the scholarship fund. Tickets, which are available from committee members, are $20. For more information, call 412-683-9690.
