Pitt to Offer Certificate in Global Studies
February 22, 2002
PITTSBURGH—The University Center for International Studies (UCIS) and the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) at the University of Pittsburgh are now offering a Global Studies certificate to graduate students interested in pursuing interdisciplinary studies of global themes.
The Global Studies Program was launched last fall with an undergraduate certificate. "Student response to this offering has far exceeded our projections," said William I. Brustein, director of UCIS and acting director of the Global Studies Program. "The backgrounds of our students suggest that they have been preparing for just such a program. Although it is in its first year, the Global Studies Program will be awarding undergraduate certificates to several students at the 2002 Commencement. We are equally excited about attracting highly qualified students to this new graduate certificate."
The Global Studies Program is designed to provide students in any school of the University with "global competence" – the ability to work effectively in different international settings, an awareness of the major currents of global change and the issues arising from them, knowledge of global organizations and business activities, the capacity for effective communications across cultural and linguistic boundaries, and an adaptability to diverse cultures.
"We're very pleased with the introduction of the new Global Studies Program on the Pitt campus," said Carolyn Ban, dean of GSPIA. "The University does so much already to bring international programs and training to students. Now a graduate student can earn a credential in topics ranging from sustainable development to global health and international conflict resolution. We expect that each student will develop a cohesive program of study uniting language, region, and thematic concentration."
Interested applicants can contact the Global Studies Program by phone, 412-624-2918; fax, 412-624-4672; or email, global@ucis.pitt.edu. More information can be obtained through the Website, www.ucis.pitt.edu/global.
