PITTSBURGH-David T. Takeuchi, professor and dean of research in the University of Washington School of Social Work, will deliver a free public lecture titled "Discrimination and Its Health Consequences Across Diverse Racial Groups" at noon March 16, at Pitt's Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP), School of Social Work Conference Center, 2017 Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland.

Takeuchi's recent work examines how race, ethnicity, and immigration factors are associated with physical and mental health using the National Latino and Asian American Study-one of the most comprehensive studies of Latinos and Asian Americans ever conducted.

Takeuchi has held leadership positions with a number of National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) centers, including the National Asian American Mental Health Research Center, Center on Managed Care, and Indiana Consortium for Mental Health Services Research; academic institutions, including UCLA, Indiana University, and the University of Washington; nongovernmental associations, including American Sociological Association, National Asian Women's Health Organization, and Institute of Medicine; and government organizations, including National Institutes of Health, Surgeon General's Office, and the National Center on Health Statistics.

In addition to research and administrative experience, Takeuchi has an extensive background in mentoring junior scholars-especially researchers from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. He is active in the American Sociological Association's Minority Fellowship Program and codirector of the NIMH-funded postdoctoral training program Family Research Consortium IV.

The talk, which is part of the Reed Smith Spring 2009 Speaker Series at CRSP, does not require registration, and lunch will be provided.

For more information about the lecture, call 412-624-7382.
