Pitt Trustees' Property and Facilities Committee Approves $43 Million in Construction, Renovation, and Upgrade Projects
PITTSBURGH-The Property and Facilities Committee of the University of Pittsburgh's Board of Trustees approved at its Nov. 7 meeting $43,151,300 in construction and renovation projects as well as four leases; a highlight of the approved expenditures is $6,100,000 in laboratory and infrastructure upgrades for nanoscience research in the Van de Graaff Building. The construction and renovation projects are expected to create 206 construction and 82 construction-support jobs, and the University will pay business privilege taxes of $57,731 on the construction projects.
Other projects approved by the committee include $9,085,000 in renovations to sorority housing in Amos Hall; a $2,600,000 expansion of the Chambers Hall fitness center on the Greensburg campus; $14,326,300 to acquire and prepare land for the construction of a new sports complex; $3,955,000 for installation of an emergency generator for the Mid-campus Complex; $5,600,000 for a redesign of the steam condensate collection systems in support of the new Carillo Street Steam Plant; and $1,485,000 for renovations to the fifth floor of the William Pitt Union.
In addition, the committee approved four leases:
The Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology, with a 10-year lease beginning in May 2009 at an initial annual cost of $418,132 for 19,346 square feet in the Bakery Square development at 6425 Penn Ave.;
The Clinical and Translational Science Institute, with a five-year lease beginning in January 2009 at an initial annual cost of $235,380 for 9,419 square feet in Forbes Tower, 3600 Forbes Ave.;
The Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center, with a lease amendment through Nov. 30, 2013, at an annual rental cost of $161,784.96 for an additional 2,413 square feet in Birmingham Towers, 2100 Wharton St.; and
The Office of Institutional Advancement, with a 10-year lease beginning in May 2009 at an initial annual cost of $492,678 for 20,965 square feet at 128 N. Craig St.
