Pitt Celebrates Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with Weeklong Celebration

Hundreds of Pitt students to volunteer in the community Jan. 18

PITTSBURGH—A day of service, in which hundreds of Pitt students volunteer with local community groups, highlights a weeklong celebration Jan. 18-22 to honor the legacy and service of renowned civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. The celebration, Creating a Just Community By Listening to the Voice of Diversity, will also feature a candlelight vigil, lectures, and an interfaith service. All events are free and open to the public.

The week of celebration is sponsored by Pitt’s Office of Cross Cultural and Leadership Development within the University’s Office of Student Affairs. A schedule of events follows.

Monday, Jan. 18
9 a.m.-2 p.m.
National Day of Service: A Day On, Not a Day Off

Hundreds of Pitt students will volunteer with community groups throughout the region. For a complete list of organizations, times, and locations, call 412-225-6384. 

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Candlelight Vigil
7:06 p.m., Cathedral of Learning Porch
Pitt members of King’s fraternity will honor their brother with a candlelight vigil. 

Tuesday, Jan. 19
#BlackLivesMatter with Opal Tometi, cofounder of the movement
6 p.m., Assembly Room, William Pitt Union
Tometi will educate and inspire the Pitt community to stand together to transform society in which the lives and contributions of all individuals are recognized equally.

Wednesday, Jan. 20
Interfaith Service: What Would Dr. King say about the State of Diversity in 2016?

Pitt student leaders share their thoughts on the topic.

Thursday, Jan. 21
Social Justice Symposium, Diversity at Pitt: A Call for Action
9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Assembly Room, William Pitt Union
Students, faculty, and staff discuss current social-justice issues faced on Pitt’s campus and brainstorm solutions to make the University more inclusive.

Friday, Jan. 22
Equipoise Luncheon
11 a.m., Assembly Room, William Pitt Union
Members of Equipoise will present the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Creating A Just Community” Award to Linda Williams-Moore, interim associate dean of students and director of student life at Pitt.
