Pitt’s Fraternities and Sororities Commit to Raise $300,000 for Children’s Miracle Network
PITTSBURGH—The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of Pittsburgh today announced a campaign to raise $300,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network program of the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation.
A student-run selection committee reviewed dozens of applications from potential beneficiaries through the office’s Greek Week philanthropy program before selecting the Children’s Miracle Network.
The students, as part of Pitt’s 38 fraternities and sororities, will raise the funds through a variety of activities and events, including canning, which is passing a donation can around at sporting events and other gatherings; the annual Dance Marathon, which is entering its 10th year and will be held in February 2015; the Steel City Step Show, a percussive dance performance which is in its 18th year and will also be held in February 2015; and Greek Sing, a talent show that will be held in March 2015.
“Our students are so excited about this new partnership because they have the opportunity to work with a well-respected national organization that does a fantastic job locally supporting children in need,” said Matthew R. Richardson, coordinator of Pitt’s Fraternity and Sorority Life in the Office of Cross Cultural and Leadership Development.
From 2006-2011, Pitt’s fraternity and sorority community raised $520,000 for the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. From 2012-2014, the community sponsored the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-Western Pennsylvania Chapter and raised $357,000 in just two years from individual chapter fundraising, Greek-wide programming, and the annual Pitt Dance Marathon.
