University of Pittsburgh Stages Presents Agamemnon Feb. 13-23

PITTSBURGH—After ten years in battle during the Trojan War, King Agamemnon returns home to resume his leadership in Argos. During his absence, his wife Clytemnestra has carefully been planning revenge for the murder of her daughter, whose sacrifice allowed Agamemnon and his troops to participate in this epic battle of Greek mythology. The University of Pittsburgh Stages production of Agamemnon draws parallels between the ancient Greek classic and contemporary experiences with war, justice, and power.

Agamemnon, written by Aeschylus and translated by Ted Hughes, runs from Feb. 13 through Feb. 23 at Pitt’s Henry Heymann Theatre, located in the basement of the Stephen Foster Memorial, Forbes Ave. and Bigelow Blvd., Oakland. Former Pitt teaching artist-in-residence Andy Nagraj will play the title role. He played the role of Judge Turpin in Pitt Stages’ recent production of Sweeney Todd and also was a cast member in Shakespeare’s Lovers and Fighters. Nagraj has worked nationally in theatre, with performances at the Court, TimeLin, and Silk Road Theatres in Chicago and at Shakespeare festivals across the country.

Dennis Schebetta will direct the production. An award-winning director, writer, and actor with film and theatre credits, Schebetta recently wrote and directed My Date With Adam. Its script received first place in last year’s Steeltown Film Factory Competition, and the movie premiered at the 2013 Three Rivers Film Festival. Schebetta also has directed Underneath the Lintel for the 12 Peers Theatre Summer Scribe Series and his own play W@ste at the Last Frontier Theatre Conference. As an actor, he recently was seen in the short film Roses Are Red and the Pittsburgh Playhouse production of August: Osage County.
