John A. Barbour Appointed Commonwealth Trustee on the Pitt Board of Trustees
PITTSBURGH—John A. “Jack” Barbour—chief executive officer, managing director, and board chair of the Pittsburgh-based law and government relations firm Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC—has been appointed a Commonwealth Trustee on the University of Pittsburgh Board of Trustees by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett. Barbour succeeds Pennsylvania 23rd Legislative District Representative Dan B. Frankel, who joined the Pitt Board in January 2004.
Barbour has been selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America since 2008. He focuses his legal practice on real estate development and financing as well as complex commercial transactions. Over the past several decades, he has represented developers, lenders, and equity participants in a wide range of sophisticated commercial real estate transactions nationwide.
In addition, Barbour has served as outside counsel to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Daniel M. Rooney and Arthur J. Rooney II families for many years. He recently led a team of Bureau of Internal Revenue attorneys in an almost total restructuring of the ownership of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Previously, he represented the Steelers in all legal aspects of the development, financing, and construction of Heinz Field.
Barbour is an active leader in civic and charitable institutions regionally and statewide. In 2011, Corbett appointed Barbour to serve as chair of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Privatization and Innovation, and he was also appointed to serve as a member of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. A board member of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Barbour assumed the chairmanship of that board earlier this year after having formerly served as board chair, from 2000 to 2008. He also is a life trustee of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and a member of the board of directors of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.
Barbour earned a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from Davidson College in 1976 and his J.D. degree from Vanderbilt University in 1979.
