Pitt Alumnus Arthur J. Rooney II to Deliver Pitt School of Law Commencement Address May 11

PITTSBURGH—Arthur J. Rooney II (A&S ’78), president of the Pittsburgh Steelers, will deliver the address for the University of Pittsburgh School of Law’s 2012 commencement ceremony, to be held at 3 p.m. May 11 in Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium and Museum, Fifth Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard, Oakland.

The University will confer 225 Juris Doctor degrees, two Doctor of Juridical Science degrees, 16 Master of Laws degrees, and 11 Master of Studies in Law degrees. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony in the Cathedral of Learning Commons Room, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland.

Prior to being named the Steelers’ president in 2003, Rooney served as the team’s vice president and general counsel. He has been a member of the Steelers’ Board of Directors since 1989.

Rooney was principally responsible for the design, development, and financing plan for Heinz Field, which opened in 2001. In 2009, he directed the successful restructuring of the Steelers’ ownership group, which now includes 12 new partners and continues the Rooney family leadership of the National Football League’s (NFL’s) fifth-oldest franchise.

Rooney is chair of the NFL Stadium Committee and serves on several other NFL committees, including the NFL Digital Media Committee, the NFL Management Council, and the NFL International Committee.

A 1982 graduate of Duquesne University School of Law, Rooney devotes substantial time to community service. He currently chairs the board of the United Way of Allegheny County and serves on the Pittsburgh Children’s Museum and Pittsburgh Public Theater boards.
