Philanthropy Forum Lecture at Pitt April 10 to Address the Essence of Strategic Giving

PITTSBURGH—How can a clear but simple understanding of philanthropic giving lead donors to make more effective grants? By articulating and refining five simple yet powerful approaches to shape their giving, donors can undertake more strategic philanthropy, according to Peter D. Frumkin, a professor of public affairs and director of the RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. Frumkin will present the lecture titled “Essence of Philanthropic Strategy” from 2:30 to 4 p.m. April 10 in Ballroom B at the University Club, 123 University Pl., Oakland.

Frumkin has authored several books on philanthropy and social entrepreneurship. His work includes Strategic Giving: The Art and Science of Philanthropy (University of Chicago Press, 2006); On Being Nonprofit: A Conceptual and Policy Primer (Harvard University Press, 2005), a discussion of the changing roles and responsibilities of nonprofit organizations in American democracy; and The Essence of Strategic Giving: A Practical Guide for Donors and Fundraisers (University of Chicago Press, 2010), written for philanthropic practitioners. He also coauthored Serving Country and Community: Who Benefits From National Service (Harvard University Press, 2010), an examination of national service programs AmeriCorps and VISTA.
