University of Pittsburgh Teams Up With The Andy Warhol Museum for Film Screening of ANPO: Art X War
PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh’s Asian Studies Center and University Center for International Studies (UCIS) in collaboration with The Andy Warhol Museum will present a screening of ANPO: Art X War (2010) at 7 p.m. April 12 in the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland. The event is free and open to the public.
The film, in Japanese and English with English subtitles, will be followed by a roundtable discussion with the film’s director, Linda Hoaglund; Geralyn Huxley, curator of film and video at The Andy Warhol Museum; and Charles Exley, assistant professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures in Pitt’s Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences.
Hoaglund, a filmmaker who was raised in rural Japan by American missionaries, uses the work of Japanese artists, photographers, and filmmakers to guide the audience through Japanese opposition to the 1951 U.S.-Japan Mutual Security Treaty, which gave the United States the right to maintain armed forces on Japanese soil.
The film screening is sponsored by—in addition to the Asian Studies Center, UCIS, and The Andy Warhol Museum— Pitt’s Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures and the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia.
