Through 10/21     Pitt’s Department of Studio Arts presents an exhibition titled On a Lucky Day a Surprising Balance of Forms and Spaces Will Appear, artwork by the Pitt Studio Arts faculty, at the University Art Gallery, Frick Fine Arts Building, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays. The gallery is closed Monday, Oct. 10. 9/30     The University of Pittsburgh will host a conference titled “Japan’s World War II in Asia: 70 Years On” on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the University Club, 123 University Place, Oakland. Sponsors for the event include Pitt’s Asian Studies Center and University Center for International Studies (UCIS). Richard J. Smethurst, a professor of history at Pitt and a UCIS research professor, will serve as conference convener. The conference is free, but space is limited. 9/29 Emily Apter, a visiting fellow in Pitt’s Humanities Center, will present the lecture “Sex and Gender as Untranslatables,” followed by responses from Pitt faculty members Sabine von Dirke, an associate professor of German; Nancy Condee, a professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures and director of Pitt’s Global Studies Center; Lara Putnam, an associate professor of history, Frayda Cohen, a visiting assistant professor of women's studies and anthropology; and Gabriella Lukacs, an assistant professor of anthropology.
