Pitt, CMU, and Duquesne Students to Face Off in ‘Great Case’ Ethics Competition

PITTSBURGH—Teams of graduate students from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne universities will test their mettle—both mentally and physically—Oct. 13 in the inaugural “Great Case” business ethics competition.

Inspired by the popular TV series The Amazing Race, the fast-paced competition will keep participating students on the move as student teams hustle to different locations on
Pitt’s campus in an effort to solve a case study related to business ethics, fiduciary responsibility, compliance, due diligence, and accountability.

“Our student teams will have a challenging assignment: addressing ethical decision-making within the financial realm,” said Audrey J. Murrell, director of the David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership in Pitt’s Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and College of Business Administrationand associate professor of business administration, psychology, and public and international affairs at Pitt. “This kind of experience-based learning will sharpen their critical-thinking skills and help prepare them to be ethical leaders.”

The winning team will receive $3,000 in prize money; second place, $1,500; and third place, $500. The case study competition is funded through a grant from BNY Mellon Foundation of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The three winning teams will be invited to attend the 2011 Pittsburgh Financial Services Symposium, “Bridge to Our Future,” at the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel on Oct. 14.
