Pitt’s LRDC Announces Inaugural Recipient of Distinguished Alumni Award

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh’s Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC) has named Susan R. Goldman the inaugural recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award, created to recognize the career accomplishments of LRDC alumni. Goldman received her PhD in psychology from Pitt in 1978. 

Goldman’s Distinguished Alumni Lecture, titled “Assessing Multiple-Source Comprehension: Implications for Instruction and Theory,” will be presented at 3 p.m. May 3 in the Glaser Auditorium of LRDC, 3939 O'Hara St., Oakland. 

A Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Psychology, and Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and codirector of the school’s Learning Sciences Research Institute, Goldman has conducted research that focuses on reading and literacy, digital literacy, and discourse and literacy. 

Goldman and her colleagues’ research in the area of discourse and literacy resulted in a $19 million grant, one of the largest Institute of Education Sciences grants ever awarded to the University of Illinois at Chicago. The grant—titled “Reading for Understanding Across Grades 6 through 12: Evidence-based Argumentation for Disciplinary Learning,”—funds a project to develop effective ways to influence reading instruction and achievement across the K-12th grade range.
