Pulitzer-Prize Winning Historian to Deliver 18th Annual E.P. Thompson Memorial Lecture at Pitt Jan. 20
PITTSBURGH—Steven Hahn, Roy F. and Jeannette P. Nichols Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, will deliver the 18th annual E. P. Thompson Memorial Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland. A reception will follow the lecture.
Titled “Black Nationalism, Social Democracy, and the American Civil Rights Movement,” Hahn’s talk is sponsored by Pitt’s Department of History and the Center for African American Urban Studies and the Economy at Carnegie Mellon University. The event commemorates the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Hahn earned his PhD from Yale University. He is author of The Roots of Southern Populism: Yeoman Farmers and the Transformation of the Georgia Upcountry, 1850-1890 (Oxford University Press, 1983), which received the Allan Nevins Prize from the Society of American Historians and the Frederick Jackson Turner Award from the Organization of American Historians.
At Harvard University, Hahn delivered the 2007 Nathan I. Huggins Lecture Series published as The Political Worlds of Slavery and Freedom (Harvard University Press, 2009).
His book A Nation Under Our Feet: Black Political Struggles in the Rural South From Slavery to the Great Migration (Harvard University Press, 2004) was awarded the Bancroft Prize in American History, the Merle Curti Prize in Social History, and the Pulitzer Prize for History.
