Harvard Economist to Lecture at Pitt About How Companies Respond To Parents’ Demand for Flexibility in the Workplace

PITTSBURGH—Claudia Goldin, the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University, will discuss how companies are responding to demands for flexibility in the workplace from working parents in a lecture at the University of Pittsburgh. Titled “Career and Family Conundrum,” the free public lecture will take place at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 6, Ballroom B, University Club, 123 University Place, Oakland. 

Sponsored by Pitt’s Department of Economics, Goldin’s talk is the 2010 McKay Lecture. 

Goldin also is the director of the National Bureau of Economic Research’s Development of the American Economy Program. Renowned for her historical work on women and the U.S. economy, she also has explored the impact of the birth control pill on women’s career and marriage decisions, the choice of women’s surnames after marriage as a social indicator, and the history of women’s effort to balance career and family. 

Goldin is the author of The Race Between Education and Technology (Belknap Press, 2008), which won the 2008 R.R. Hawkins Award for the most outstanding scholarly work in all disciplines of the arts and sciences. 

The McKay Lecture is named for Professor Marion McKay, who chaired Pitt’s economics department for more than 30 years and who remained active in the field of economics until his death in 1978, at age 95.
