Pitt Launches Student Engagement Campaign With “Pancakes and Politics” Breakfast Sept. 2 and Celebratory Reception Sept. 7

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GPSA) and undergraduate Student Government Board (SGB) have united to launch Pitt’s Student Civic Engagement Campaign in an effort to increase voter registration and election participation. 

The campaign begins with a “Pancakes and Politics” breakfast featuring U.S. Representative Michael Doyle from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m. Sept. 2 in the William Pitt Union, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland. “Pancakes and Politics” events will bring politicians to campus for discussion and interaction, allowing students to become more informed about and engaged in the political landscape of the region. 

On Sept. 7, Pittsburgh City Council will deliver a proclamation declaring September Student Civic Engagement Month during its weekly council meeting, to be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the City Council Chambers in the City-County Building, Fifth Floor, 414 Grant St., Downtown. Later that day, GPSA and SGB will host a reception to celebrate Student Civic Engagement Month from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Frick Fine Arts Building’s Cloister, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland. 

The events mark a new era of civic engagement in Pittsburgh’s student population, said Sudipta “Nila” Devanath, president of Pitt’s GPSA. In the future the newly formed Pittsburgh Student Government Council, comprising student government representatives from Pittsburgh’s major institutions of higher education, will work toward student voter registration efforts by using the GPSA/SGB model.
