Pitt's Faith Tech Center to Offer Fall Computer Literacy Classes

PITTSBURGH—On Sept. 17, the University of Pittsburgh Faith Tech Center will begin its fall session of free basic computer classes at St. James Episcopal Church, 11524 Frankstown Road, in Penn Hills. The program, part of the Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance, is open to people of all ages and backgrounds.
"The community's need for this type of program is evident from the response we have received since the program began," said Terrence Milani, director of Pitt's Student Volunteer Outreach and the Faith Tech computer literacy program.
The courses offered this session cover the following areas: operating computers, navigating the Internet, and using software programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. More advanced courses in Web design and computer refurbishing also are available. Several courses are designed for teachers and meet Pennsylvania Department of Education Act 48 requirements.
The Vira I. Heinz Endowment funds the Faith Tech Center, operated by Pitt and the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh.
Students are encouraged, but not required, to serve in the community in return for the free computer classes. To register for classes, or for more information, call 412-242-5722. Those interested in volunteering at Faith Tech should e-mail volunteer@faithtechcenter.com or call 412-648-3580.
