Pitt and Allegheny College Sign Agreement to Guarantee Admission into Pitt's School of Education for Qualified Allegheny Students

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh School of Education and Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., have signed an articulation agreement that will give qualified Allegheny students guaranteed admission to Pitt's program. Allegheny students who complete their undergraduate work at Allegheny must satisfy Pitt's basic admission requirements for the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program to qualify for the arrangement.

"In considering applications to our teacher preparation programs from outside of Pitt, we have been regularly impressed with the quality of those applying from Allegheny College," says Alan Lesgold, dean of Pitt's School of Education. "This agreement formalizes the recent reality that such students fit extremely well among the students who succeed in being admitted to a very accomplished group — the people we prepare at Pitt to be the top teachers of the next generation."

Pitt's School of Education allows students who plan to become teachers to pursue a high-quality undergraduate education — either at Pitt's College of Arts and Sciences or Allegheny College — before completing the post-baccalaureate work needed to earn teacher certification and the MAT. This arrangement, then, gives students the option of attending a more intimate undergraduate institution.

"Our new partnership with the University of Pittsburgh enables many more young men and women from the region to plan careers in education while studying within a residential, liberal arts college setting," says Dean of Allegheny College Lloyd Michaels. "The graduate program at Pitt enjoys a prestigious reputation and recognizes through this arrangement the quality of teacher preparation that our general curriculum and strong majors provide."
