Contact:

PITTSBURGH--Developing successful programs that unite the old and young will be the focus of a three-day conference at the University of Pittsburgh from Wednesday, July 11, through Friday, July 13.

The 9th International Intergenerational Training Institute, using the theme "Rebuilding Communities: An Intergenerational Approach," will take place at Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., and the Frick Fine Arts (FFA) Building on Schenley Drive. Richard Browdie, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, will deliver the keynote address, "Intergenerational Programs: A Community Asset," at noon Wednesday in Room 2P56 of Posvar Hall.

A panel discussion "The Politics of Rebuilding Communities," will feature Browdie; Donna Butts, executive director of Generations United; and Dave Farley, grants officer for the City of Pittsburgh. It will take place at 1:15 p.m. Thursday in the FFA Auditorium.

#The remainder of the conference, held in FFA and Posvar Hall classrooms, will offer intensive workshops to help human service professionals, educators, and others understand and develop intergenerational programs. Topics to be discussed include parenting grandparents, offering diverse programs in schools, mentoring and tutoring, using older adults as school resources, recruiting youth and elders, instituting program management, and training older adults.

The Institute is sponsored every year by Generations Together, a Pitt program of intergenerational studies. Last year's event attracted participants from 19 states and three foreign countries. The fee is $375 for the entire conference, but day rates are available. To register, or for more information, contact Louise Humphreys, Institute Coordinator, at 412-648-2209 or humphlo@pitt.edu.
