PITT TO HOLD COLLEGE IN HIGH SCHOOL ARGUMENT FORUM ON SCHOOL SAFETY VERSUS STUDENT CIVIL LIBERTIES
PITTSBURGH, April 27 -- The University of Pittsburgh Department of Communication will hold the first College in High School (CHS) Argument Forum on Monday, April 30, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, in room 1P56 Posvar Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Students from area high schools who have been participating in the College in High School Program through Pitt's Department of Communication will address the question, "Should school safety take priority over student civil liberties?" Debates conducted in the CHS Argument Forum take place sequentially in the classroom, school, and public sphere.
Alison Kraynik, Seneca Valley High School; Jason Kelly, Central Catholic High School; and Kathryn Fulton, Quaker Valley High School will defend school safety. Julie Prior, Oakland Catholic High School; David Wolfe, Trinity High School; and John Clamaris, Belle Vernon High School will defend student civil liberty.
Invited guest speakers to the forum are Robert Fadzen, chief of security for Pittsburgh Public Schools; Witold Walczak, director of the Pittsburgh ACLU; and Richard Garland, director of Youthworks, Inc. The panelists will take audience questions following the formal presentation.
