PITT'S YOUNG WRITERS INSTITUTE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

PITTSBURGH, April 17 -- The University of Pittsburgh's Department of English will hold its annual Young Writers Institute on weekdays in June and July, with dates varying from site to site. Workshops will be held at Pitt's main campus in Oakland; The East Liberty Presbyterian Church; Calvary United Methodist Church, North Side; Beaver Area Middle School High School; Central Elementary School, Allison Park; Mellon Middle School, Mt. Lebanon; and Trinity Middle School, Washington.

The Institute is a three-week summer workshop for students in grades 3 through 12 who enjoy writing and want to develop their craft. Writing teachers and professional writers will hold writing workshops, individual conferences, and response groups. Students receive instruction in free writing, revision, editing, and the use of computers in writing and publishing.

Students are introduced to several types of writing and may also specialize in poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and memoir. At the end of the institute, participants choose their favorite pieces for publication in an anthology of the Institute.
