FIRST NORDENBERG LAW AND PSYCHIATRY LECTURE TO FEATURE FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY AND JURISPRUDENCE EXPERT

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 24 -- Paul S. Appelbaum, M.D., the A. F. Zeleznik Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry, will deliver the Inaugural Nordenberg Lecture in Law and Psychiatry on Thursday, Nov. 2, at noon, in the University of Pittsburgh School of Law's Teplitz Moot Courtroom, 3900 Forbes Ave., Oakland.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be an annual event. It is funded by a gift from Thomas Detre, M.D., executive vice president for International and Academic Programs and director of International Medical Affairs for Diversified Services, Inc., of UPMC Health System. Detre is former senior vice chancellor for Health Sciences at Pitt.

Appelbaum is chairman of psychiatry, and director of the Law and Psychiatry Program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is the author of many articles and several books on law in clinical practice, for which he received the Manfred S. Guttmacher Award from the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law.

Appelbaum's other honors include the Isaac Ray Award of the American Psychiatric Association for "outstanding contributions to forensic psychiatry and the psychiatric aspects of jurisprudence," and serving as the Fritz Redlich Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences.

Vice president of the American Psychiatric Association, Appelbaum also was president of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, president of the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society, chair of the Council on Psychiatry and Law and the Commission on Judicial Action for the American Psychiatric Association, and a member of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Mental Health and the Law.
