TWO-DAY PITT CONFERENCE TO EXPLORE THE KOREAN WAR
PITTSBURGH, June 9 -- The General Matthew B. Ridgway Center for International Security Studies at the University of Pittsburgh will gather experts from around the country to discuss the "History of the Korean War," on Thursday and Friday, June 15 and 16, in Room 2M/2P of Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet Street in Oakland.
Thursday's schedule begins with registration from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and concludes from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. with a tour of soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall. On Friday, the conference begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m.
The goal of the conference is to bring together academics and historians to rediscover the Korean War, assess some of the important issues that it raised, and discuss new interpretations and documentation of the war.
Among the topics to be discussed are the causes of the Korean War, Civil-Military Relations, Myths of the Korean War, Diplomacy and the War, Biological Warfare Issues, and the Korean War in Film and Television. Of particular interest to educators is a session Thursday, from 2:45 p.m. to 4 p.m., on "Teaching the Korean War." (Note: A schedule and description of the conference sessions is attached.)

The conference is the next in a series of commemorative events planned by the Pittsburgh Committee for the Commemoration of the Korean War, whose members include representatives of the University of Pittsburgh; the Korean War Veterans Association of Western Pennsylvania and the Korean War Veterans Color Guard; Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum; Stars & Stripes Omnimedia, Inc. (www.stripes.com); the Pittsburgh Pirates; National City Bank of Pennsylvania; the Veterans Administration; Pitt Army ROTC and Alumni; Morgan Stanley Dean Witter; and city, county, and state government.
