SONIA SANCHEZ TO KICK OFF PITT'S 30TH BLACK WEEK
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 5 -- Poet Sonia Sanchez will speak about "The Edge of Tolerance," on Friday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. in David Lawrence Hall as the University of Pittsburgh's Black Action Society celebrates 30 years of Black Week. The week's other featured speaker, African-American psychologist Na'im Akbar, will talk on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. in the William Pitt Union (WPU) Assembly Room.
Sanchez, an award-winning poet, activist and scholar, is the Laura Carnell Professor of English and Women's Studies at Temple University. Known as one of the leaders of the Black Arts Movement, she is author of many books, including "Wounded in the House of a Friend" and "Does Your House Have Lions?" A nominee for the 1998 National Book Critics Circle Award, Sanchez lives in Philadelphia.
Akbar is a pioneer in the development of an African-centered approach to modern psychology. A former president of the National Association of Black Psychologists, Akbar teaches in the Department of Psychology at Florida State University in Tallahassee. He has written four books, among them an analysis of the psychological legacy of slavery, "Chains and Images of Psychological Slavery."
