PITT PRESS SPONSORS RENAISSANCE I PHOTO EXHIBIT
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 22 -- The University of Pittsburgh Press will present an exhibit of Renaissance I photographs from the Pittsburgh Photographic Library (PPL) from Monday, Nov. 1, through Friday, Nov. 19, in the Regional Enterprise Tower (the old Alcoa Building), 425 Sixth Ave., downtown.
Sponsored in conjunction with ProArts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the arts in Greater Pittsburgh, the exhibit coincides with Pitt Press's publication of "Witness to the Fifties: The Pittsburgh Photographic Library, 1950-1953."
The seed for the PPL was planted in the late 1940s with backing from the University of Pittsburgh and the heads of major Pittsburgh corporations. It resulted in the photographic history of Renaissance I.
"Witness to the Fifties" features a collection of PPL photographs that capture the destruction and massive rebuilding that marked Pittsburgh's urban renaissance. The book will be available at local bookstores in November.
