PITT ASSOCIATE CHANCELLOR NAMED SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW BY LUXEMBOURG

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 8 -- Vijai Singh, associate chancellor and professor of sociology and the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named one of only three senior research fellows by the Centre d'Etudes de Populations, de Pauvrete et de Politiques Socio-Economiques (CEPS/INSTEAD) in Luxembourg. Singh was elected by the board of directors of the institute.

The official announcement was made last week by Gaston Schaber, CEPS/INSTEAD director, during a visit to Pittsburgh by Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker.

Schaber cited Singh's 15 year association with CEPS/INSTEAD, shared common research and emerging new opportunities for cooperation between his institute and Pitt as reasons for the appointment.

The CEPS/INSTEAD has assembled a group of researchers who have been working to make various data bases comparable as well as conduct longitudinal studies. Some of the comparative data bases include:

• The Luxembourg Income Study "LIS" (80 datasets from

26 industrialized countries, including 5 Eastern countries);

• The Luxembourg Employment Study "LES" (Labour Force

Surveys with datasets from 14 countries, including 4 Eastern

partner countries);

• The longitudinal Comparability Project (PACO) for Household

Panel Studies including the EU countries, the United States

as well as Hungary and Poland

As a senior research fellow, Singh will participate in the annual meeting of the institute to evaluate current research programs, research infrastructure and funding sources. He may develop his own research project while collaborating with other CEPS/INSTEAD researchers when appropriate. Additionally, Singh will serve as one of the major links between the U.S. and European scholars in trans-Atlantic policy research.
