PITT PROFESSOR HONORED WITH AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY AWARD
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 1 -- The American Chemical Society (ACS) will honor University of Pittsburgh Professor Dennis P. Curran with the ACS Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry for 2000.
Curran, of Point Breeze, is a distinguished service professor of chemistry and Bayer professor of chemistry. He is internationally known for his contributions to the design and application of free radical reactions in organic synthesis. In 1997, Curran introduced the new field of fluorous synthesis, which capitalizes on the ability of the chemical fluorine to readily separate from other materials in chemical reactions.
Sponsored by Aldrich Chemical Company, this award was established in 1955 by the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association to recognize and encourage creative work in synthetic organic chemistry. The award will be conferred during a special presentation at the American Chemical Society meeting in San Francisco in March, 2000.
