PROFESSOR ED SELL CELEBRATES 50 YEARS AT PITT'S SCHOOL OF LAW
PITTSBURGH, March 22 -- The University of Pittsburgh School of Law is honoring W. Edward Sell in his fiftieth year of teaching and leadership by hosting a dinner, "A Celebration of Sell," on Friday, April 9, at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh at 6 p.m. The event is also an opportunity to raise funds for the W. Edward Sell Endowed Faculty Chair, which would be the school's first fully-funded faculty chair.
After graduating from Yale Law School, Sell began his teaching career at Pitt in 1947. He served as a full-time professor of law longer than any other person in the history of the school and was dean from 1966 to 1977. Sell's expertise of corporate law made him known as the "Father of Pennsylvania's Modern Business Corporation Statute." He is the author of several books and scholarly titles on corporate law, including a multi-volume work, Pennsylvania Business Corporations, that is considered a standard among the Pennsylvania legal community.
A recipient of both the Law School's Excellence-in-Teaching Award and the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award, Sell is now an Emeritus Distinguished Service Professor.
"Ed Sell is a great leader and a wonderful colleague. He has been an outstanding mentor for me in the dean's office," says David Herring, interim dean of Pitt's School of Law. "As I go out into the legal community I have come to realize just how many people believe that Ed Sell is the Law School. He is a larger-than-life figure who is tremendously devoted to legal education and to Pitt. We have all benefited greatly from his tenure at the school."
A native of Hanover, PA, Sell lives in Mt. Lebanon with
his wife Cordelia. He is a member of numerous organizations, including Phi Beta Kappa, American Law Institute (Life Member), American Bar Foundation (Life Fellow), the Allegheny County Bar Association and the Masons. He has been listed in "Who's Who in America," "Directory of American Scholars," "Who's Who in American Education," and "Who's Who in American Finance."
