PITT CAPS BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH CAPOEIRA-ANGOLA CELEBRATION, FEB. 26 & 27
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 22 -- The University of Pittsburgh's Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS), Black Action Society and the Negro Cato Capoeira-Angola Foundation will present two days of celebration of Capoeira-Angola,
Feb. 26-27, on the Pitt campus in Oakland.
Capoeira-Angola, now considered by many to be the national sport of Brazil or a Brazilian martial arts form, is actually a rich artistic expression that is part of the Afro-Brazilian cultural heritage suppressed for a long time along with other expressions of black and popular culture of that country. The form of capoeira found at the beginning of this century known as Capoeira-Angola combines elements of dance, martial art, music, ritual and mimicry. Intermingling these elements results in an original art form.
The celebration schedule is:
Friday, Feb. 26
7 - 9 p.m. Bellefield Building, 315 S. Bellefield Avenue: "Presentation and Discussion of the Historical Background: African Roots of the Music of Capoeira," followed by a Capoeira-Angola demonstration.
