UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO TOP AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 27 -- The University of Pittsburgh's Challenge for Excellence Programs (UCEP) will award the Faison, Henderson and Lavelle Scholarships for academic excellence and leadership to outstanding African-American high school students at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 in Dining Room B in Pitt's William Pitt Union.

The scholarship recipients have demonstrated academic excellence through their exceptional high school performance and are among the highest-achieving African-American students admitted to Pitt. This year's 14 recipients, from various cities throughout the United States, have been honored in Who's Who Among American High School Students and the National Honor Society. Many are class valedictorians and are active in community volunteer efforts, church groups and other student organizations.

Twelve Faison Scholarships are awarded in honor of Helen Faison, a retired vice-superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools, to students in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Lavelle Scholarships are awarded in honor of Robert Lavelle, a Pittsburgh businessman, to two students in the College of Business Administration. The Henderson Award is given in honor of Donald Henderson, a former Pitt Provost, to one student in the School of Engineering.
