ATTENTION PHOTO AND FEATURE EDITORS EDUCATION FOR PITT FRESHMEN BEGINS AT ORIENTATION

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 26 -- The University of Pittsburgh educates and entertains its incoming freshman class with four days of orientation festivities and informative presentations beginning on Thursday, Aug. 27 and ending on Sunday, Aug. 30.

Chancellor Mark Nordenberg, Provost James Maher, and faculty and staff in academic regalia will officially welcome students during the Freshman Convocation on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. This event is followed by the Chancellor's Picnic on the lower Cathedral of Learning lawn for students and their families.

Orientation will culminate on Sunday, Aug. 30, with Lantern Night and the Night of the Panther. Freshman women will meet in the Cathedral of Learning Commons Room while the freshman men gather in the William Pitt Union at 7:30 p.m. The women will process to Heinz Chapel for Lantern Night and the men to the Commons Room for the Night of the Panther. Both ceremonies begin at 8 p.m. followed by a joint reception in the Commons Room.

Other orientation events include a Pitt Spirit Pep Rally, Volleyball Tournament, Dating Game, Casino and Carnival, 70s Dance Party, informative presentations on safe sex and responsible partying, and the Pitt/Penn State Blood Drive. For more information call the Office of New Student Programs at
