NEW PITT-FUNDED INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAMS WILL BRING YOUNG AND OLD TOGETHER
PITTSBURGH, April 8 -- Intergenerational programs proposed at a Pitt conference last fall are becoming a reality this spring.
New funding is launching nine new programs that will bring local children and senior citizens together in activities including gardening, physical fitness, foster grandparents for inner city children, and sessions in which teens train the elderly in computer skills.
Seed grants for $1100 will be presented to each of the nine agencies and their partner groups on April 9, from 1 - 2 p.m. at the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging, 441 Smithfield Street, in Conference Room 2 on the second floor.
The programs were formulated last November by participants in the day-long Intergenerational Conference, co-sponsored by Pitt's Generations Together and the United Way. Seed grant recipients include the Citiparks Preschool, Gladstone Middle School, the Y.M.C.A. and Lutheran Youth and Family.
Funding is being provided by the University of Pittsburgh, State Dept of Aging, and the Jewish Healthcare Foundation.
