PITT'S PPC TO PRESENT MAYA ANGELOU LECTURE

PITTSBURGH, March 26 -- The University of Pittsburgh's Pitt Program Council will present a lecture by acclaimed poet, writer, and actress Maya Angelou on Tuesday, April 7, at 8:30 p.m. in the Carnegie Music Hall, Forbes Ave., Oakland.

Inaugural poet for President Bill Clinton in 1993 and a writer for the Oprah Winfrey series "Brewster Place," Angelou has received countless honors and awards. Her book of poetry, "Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'Fore I Diiie," was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize; she received an Emmy Nomination for best supporting actress for her performance in "Roots;" and was presented with a Grammy Award for "On the Pulse of Morning," Best Spoken Word Album.

Angelou wrote and presented a poem to honor the 50th anniversary of the United Nations in 1995 and was named UNICEF's National Ambassador the following year.

In addition to her many books of poetry and prose, Angelou has written several children's books including "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" and "My Painted House, My Friendly Chicken and Me." She is currently working on a series of books about children of different international cultures. "Kofi and His Magic," the first of the series, was published in 1996.

Student tickets are $8 with valid Pitt I.D. and are available at the William Pitt Union ticket office only. Non-student tickets are $22 and can be purchased in the William Pitt Union (check or money order only) or at all TicketMaster locations. Pitt students must show a Pitt I.D. when purchasing tickets and upon entry to the Carnegie Music Hall. Anyone presenting a student ticket for admission without a valid Pitt student I.D. will be denied admission and will be charged an extra $25 for admission.
