PITTSBURGH, Mar. 5 -- National Brain Awareness Week, Mar. 16-22, kicks off at the University of Pittsburgh with a brain awareness town meeting sponsored by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience.

The town meeting will be held Mar. 16 on the Pitt campus in the Frick Fine Arts Building, located on Schenley Drive opposite the Carnegie Library, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Speakers at the town meeting will include prominent local researchers discussing recent progress in brain research. Planned topics to be covered include brain imaging, depression, psychological trauma and dissociative disorders, schizophrenia, and more. An extended question-and-answer period and coffee social will provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about ongoing clinical and basic neuroscience research in Western Pennsylvania.

Brain Awareness Week is a national event created by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and the Society for Neuroscience designed to educate the public about the newest research into the functions and dysfunctions of the brain. Other Brain Awareness Week events locally include visits by Pitt neuroscientists to area schools and a middle school poster contest.

Mayor Tom Murphy and the Allegheny County Commissioners, headed by Chairman Bob Cranmer, have proclaimed the week of March 16-22, 1998 to be Brain Awareness Week in the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.
