NEW YORKER MAGAZINE WRITER TO LECTURE AT PITT

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 26 -- Susan Orlean, staff writer for "The New Yorker" magazine, will present a lecture-reading on Wednesday, March 11, at 8 p.m. in the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning, Room 501.

Prior to becoming a staff writer for "The New Yorker" in 1992, Orlean contributed signed articles and Talk of the Town pieces. Orlean has written Profiles and Reporter at Large articles, and is currently writing a series of American popular culture columns, called Popular Chronicles.

In addition to working at "The New Yorker," Orlean was a contributing editor at "Rolling Stone" and "Vogue," and a columnist for the "Boston Globe Sunday Magazine." She has also written for "The New York Times Magazine," "Spy" and "Esquire."

Orlean is also the author of several books. "Red Socks and Blue Fish," is a compilation of columns she wrote for the "Globe Sunday Magazine." "Saturday Night" is a journal of essays chronicling her experiences about spending Saturday nights in different communities across the country. Her newest book, "The Millionaires' Hothouse," about orchid poachers in Florida, soon will be published by Random House.

Orlean received her B.A. with honors from the University of Michigan in 1976. She resides in Manhattan with her husband.
