Movie Director Wes Craven to Give Lecture at Pitt April 4

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh's Pitt Program Council will host a lecture by movie director Wes Craven, at 8:30 p.m. April 4, in the William Pitt Union Ballroom, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland. Admission is $5 and free for students with a valid Pitt ID.

A Cleveland native, Craven was born in 1939 and earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and education at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill., in 1963. He earned the Master of Arts degree in philosophy at Johns Hopkins University in 1964. Once a college teacher and a taxi driver, Craven began his directing career when he was a sound editor for a postproduction company in New York in the early 1970s.

Craven found success with the 1972 release of his first horror movie, Last House on the Left. His second movie, The Hills Have Eyes (1977), won the Critic's Prize at the Sitges Film Festival. Recipient of many other awards, including Best Movie at the Avoriaz Film Festival for A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Craven is the director of the popular Scream trilogy of the 1990s. His latest movie is the 2004 Cursed.
