Pitt to Present Korean Music and Dance Performance

Contact:

PITTSBURGH—The enchanting style and tradition of ancient Korean dance will come to life in a one-hour presentation by the Nori Company, a dance and percussion ensemble that will perform at 8 p.m. March 18 in the University of Pittsburgh's Bellefield Hall Auditorium, 315 S. Bellefield Ave., Oakland.

Comprised of artists from a variety of cultural backgrounds, the six-member ensemble will present Poongmul-Nori, a traditional dance that has been performed in Korean farming villages for thousands of years. It can involve anywhere from 12 to 50 dancers at a time, and each farming village has its own style. This tradition of music and dance was used during prayers for a good harvest or to bring healing and blessings to a community.

Tickets for the performance, to be sold only at the door, are $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens and children under 12; students with a valid Pitt ID are admitted free. For further information, call 412-648-7370.

The event is cosponsored by the Asian Studies Center in Pitt's Center for International Studies, the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, and the Department of Music.
