Poet Tomaz Salamun to Speak at Pitt Jan. 19

PITTSBURGH—Tomaz Salamun, one of Central Europe's leading poets, will give an evening reading at the University of Pittsburgh campus as part of the Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series, at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 19 in Room 125, Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, Schenley Drive. This event is free and open to the public.

Salamun has written more than 30 collections of poetry, at least seven of which have been translated into English, including The Selected Poems of Tomaz Salamun (Ecco Press, 1988), The Shepherd, the Hunter (Pedernal, 1992), The Four Questions of Melancholy (White Pine, 1997), Feast (Harcourt Brace, 2000), A Ballad for Metka Krasovec (Twisted Spoon Press, 2001), Poker (Ugly Duckling Press, 2004), and Blackboards (Saturnalia Books, 2004).

Born in Zagreb, Croatia, Salamun, was raised in Koper, Slovania, where he continues to write his poetry. He earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from the University of Liubljana, Slovenia. Salamun has earned such awards as the Preseren Fund Prize, the Jenko Prize, and a Pushcart Prize. He also was awarded a Fulbright to Columbia University and a fellowship to the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa. His work has been published internationally in various journals.

The 2004-05 Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series, which runs through April 7, is cosponsored by the Wyndham Garden Hotel-University Place, Pitt's Center for Latin American Studies, University Center for International Studies, The Book Center, and the University of Pittsburgh Press.
