Pitt's African Dance and Drum Ensemble Presents Black Nativity Nov. 26-Dec. 19

PITTSBURGH—The Shona Sharif African Dance and Drum Ensemble, part of Pitt's Department of Africana Studies Department, presents its unique and exciting production of Langston Hughes' musical, Black Nativity, Nov. 26-Dec. 19 in the Seventh-Floor Auditorium of Alumni Hall, 4227 Fifth Ave., Oakland.

Black Nativity retells the story of the birth of Jesus from the perspective of the Black community through an array of rhythmic choreography, glorious voices, scripture, and the works of legendary poet, playwright, and social activist Langston Hughes. The play, which opened on Broadway in 1961, is performed annually at Pitt during the holiday season. Under the direction of artistic director Oronde Sharif and musical director Trini Massie, the cast features the voices of some of the region's finest gospel performers.
