Brazilian Music Concert to Benefit Pitt's Latin American and Caribbean Heritage Nationality Room

PITTSBURGH—A concert featuring Brazilian vocalist Silvia Lazo and classical guitarist Paul Grove to benefit the University of Pittsburgh Latin American and Caribbean Heritage Nationality Classroom will be held at 8 p.m. Sept. 25 in Bellefield Hall Auditorium, 315 Bellefield Ave., Oakland.

The classroom is one of seven proposed Nationality Rooms now in the planning phase. Admission to the benefit concert is $3 for individual student tickets or two for $5,

The Lazo/Grove duo performs throughout the United States and abroad. Their repertoire comprises South America's vast musical landscape, including music from the Brazilian classical period to the contemporary Bossa Nova, as well as Latin and Iberian American pieces. Among the composers highlighted by the duo are Heitor Villa-Lobos, Cesar Guerra-Peixe, Claudio Santoro, Carlos Gomes, Carlos Gardel, Astor Piazzolla, Agustin Barrios, and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Lazo was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, and has lived in the United States since 1993. Fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, she cohosts the weekly Latin Lounge program at Thin Air Community Radio, 92.3 FM, in Spokane, Wa. Lazo's interest in the arts led her to pursue a degree in theater and music at Whitworth College in Washington.

Grove, originally from Philadelphia, heads the guitar department at Gonzaga University. He is an accomplished classical guitarist who has received numerous awards and grants. He attended the Peabody Conservatory and earned the Ph.D. degree at the University of Arizona.
