Legendary Jazz Greats to Convene on University of Pittsburgh Campus Nov. 3-6 for 34th Annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert

PITTSBURGH—Eight world-renowned jazz artists will convene on the University of Pittsburgh Oakland campus Nov. 3-6 for the 34th annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert, the longest-running event of its kind in the country.

Performers include Lew Soloff, trumpet; Oscar Brashear, trumpet; Donald Harrison, alto saxophone; Joe Lovano, tenor saxophone; Mark Whitfield, guitar; Patrice Rushen, piano; George Mraz, bass; and Idris Muhammad, drums. These legendary musicians will perform under the direction of Nathan Davis, head of Pitt's Jazz Studies Program and founder of the annual event.

During Jazz Week Nov. 3-6, the guest artists will conduct free on-campus seminars, host miniclinics for students at area schools, and give free performances at community venues. A movie and lecture about the music industry also will be part of the campus activities. The week will culminate with a concert at 8 p.m. Nov. 6 in Carnegie Music Hall. Concert tickets, $18 general admission and $8 for students with a valid ID, are scheduled to go on sale Sept. 22. The Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert was the first academic jazz seminar in the country to feature international artists connecting with aspiring student musicians in a lecture format, then performing together as an ensemble. All seminars, the lecture, and movie continue to be open to the public at no charge.
