Pitt Alumni Association Elects New Executive Committee

San Francisco businessman Keith Schaefer named president

and Pennsylvania dentist named president-elect

PITTSBURGH—Keith E. Schaefer (CAS '71), executive partner of Constellation Partners in San Francisco, was named president of the University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association, and Brian Generalovich (CAS '66, DEN '68), a dentist in Hermitage, Pa., was named president-elect at the association's April 23 board meeting, along with several other newly elected officers.

Other Alumni Association appointees are Vice President F. James McCarl (CGS '73), chair of Gateway Bank in Pittsburgh; Vice President Bernard Mack (CAS '88), Pittsburgh State Farm Insurance owner and agent; Secretary Arnold B. Silverman (LAW '62), a lawyer with Eckert, Seamans, Cherin and Mellott in Pittsburgh; and Treasurer Mary Ellen Callahan (CAS '90), a lawyer who is an associate with Hogan and Hartson in Washington, D.C.

A Pitt 2000 Distinguished Alumni Fellow, Schaefer recently served as president-elect of the Alumni Association and chair of its Nominations Committee. He earned the Bachelor of Science in political science and economics at Pitt. After serving as an officer in the Navy for three years, he attended the University of California, Los Angeles school of business. A San Francisco resident, Schaefer is active in the Pitt Club of San Francisco.

Constellation Partners, Schaefer's firm, focuses on the needs of small to midsize companies, helping them to establish or improve their presence in the United States and Europe. He is a member of the board of directors of ECI, and New Canoe. He also serves as an advisory board member of Composite Software, NextTV, and College Track, a nonprofit organization assisting disadvantaged high school students with practical work experience. Schaefer is a member of the steering committee for the Socrates Society at the Aspen Institute and a former member of the advisory board of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He coauthored Netresults, a best-selling book and standard reference for Web marketing that is used by many universities and graduate schools of business.

President-elect Generalovich, a Pitt Volunteer of the Year in 2000, has served as treasurer and vice president of Pitt's Alumni Association as well as director emeritus of its board of directors.

Generalovich attended Pitt on an athletic scholarship and played basketball from 1961 to 1964 and football in 1964. Drafted by the New York Knicks, The Boston Patriots, and the Pittsburgh Steelers after earning the Bachelor of Science degree, Generalovich passed up these opportunities to attend Pitt's School of Dental Medicine. While in dental school in 1965-66, he played in the Eastern Professional Basketball League. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame's Western Chapter in 1986 and the Mercer County Hall of Fame in 1996 and serves on its board of directors. Generalovich also is a member of the Rocky Mountain Orthodontics Dentist Athletic Hall of Fame.

McCarl, a nationally known entrepreneur, had a 30-year career at the helm of McCarl's Inc., a family-owned construction business. He has received numerous awards, including Pitt's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2002, the ARC Beaver County Chapter Distinguished Community Service Award, and the Community Champion Award for Western Pennsylvania. He created the McCarl Center for Nontraditional Student Success in Pitt's College of General Studies. And, to honor Pitt athletes, he established the F. James and Carol McCarl Hall of Champions in the Petersen Events Center.

Mack, who owns and manages real estate in the Pittsburgh area, joined State Farm after a 14-year career with Sears and Roebuck's executive program. He handles mutual funds and variable life insurance for State Farm. He has served as president of the Elizabeth, Pa., Chamber of Commerce, is a board member of the Macedonia Development Corporation, and is a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church in Pittsburgh's Hill district. Mack has served as president of Pitt's African American Alumni Council.

Silverman heads the Intellectual Property (IP) Department at Eckert, Seamans, Cherin and Mellott. He has specialized in IP law since 1962 and is one of approximately 50 attorneys in the United States to be elected to membership in the British Chartered Institute of Patent Agents. A cum laude graduate of Pitt's law school, Silverman was a member of the Order of the Coif and editor of Pitt's Law Review.

Callahan, who was a Chancellor's Scholar at Pitt as an undergraduate, received her law degree from the University of Chicago Law School. She specializes in antitrust and has extensive litigation experience in First Amendment cases involving telecommunications and Internet policies and filtering. She was third chair in a successful challenge to the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which was affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2000. A Pitt Truman Scholarship winner, Callahan graduated magna cum laude and received the Bachelor of Philosophy degree from Pitt's Honors College in 1990.

In addition to the executive positions, several people were named directors-at-large. They are Chester Babst III (LAW '73), a partner with Babst, Calland, Clements, and Zomnir PC in Pittburgh; Karen Fisher (PHARM '86, LAW '89), associate vice president for Health Care Affairs at the Association of American Medical Colleges in Washington, D.C.; S. Jeffrey Kondis (ENG '77, KGSB '82), director of corporate development at Watson Standard in Pittsburgh; Andrew J. Kuzneski Jr. (BBA '62), president of A.J. Kuzneski Jr., Inc., in Indiana, Pa.; Jason Matthews (CAS '91), president of eSGS Group in Pittsburgh; Jack Smith (CAS '69, MED '73), of Orthopedic Surgeon in Greensburg; Joan K. Snyder (BUS '01), a sales representative with Eli Lilly and Company in Pittsburgh; and Erin Confer-Staggers (CAS '94), associate director of alumni relations at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. Michael A. Bryson (CAS '68), executive vice president of finance and CFO of Mellon Financial Corporation in Pittsburgh, was named director emeritus.
