May 7 Policy Conference to Address the Importance of E.U.-U.S. Legal Relations
PITTSBURGH—In the spirit of true transatlantic dialogue, members of the European Commission, the U.S. Department of State, and academicians from both Europe and the United States, among others, will meet to discuss the evolving relationship between the European Union (E.U.) and the United States in the areas of private law, private international law, and judicial cooperation. The policy conference Private Law, Private International Law, and Judicial Cooperation in the E.U.-U.S. Relationship begins with a private reception Thursday, May 6, and ends with a private panel discussion Saturday, May 8. The sessions taking place from 9 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. Friday, May 7, in the Members Lounge of the University Club, 123 University Pl., Oakland, will be free to Pitt faculty and students.
Three sessions will be held May 7. The first session will establish a framework for comparing the role of private law and private international law in Europe and the United States. Session two will address the role Europe and the United States played in the development of private international law. The final session explores the multilateral institutions within which E.U.-U.S. cooperation may occur.
The conference has been approved by the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Board. Attorneys attending the conference are eligible for six and one-half hours of substantive CLE credits. Registration and fee are required. To register, call 412-648-7023.
The conference is sponsored by Pitt's Center for West European Studies and European Union Center within the University Center for International Studies and the Center for International Legal Education in Pitt's School of Law, as well as the Institute for European Studies of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. A grant from the Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, D.C., provided partial funding for the conference.
