Pitt and Amizade Cooperative Offer 16 Different Service-Learning Courses for Summer 2004

PITTSBURGH—The Amizade Global Service-Learning Center at the University of Pittsburgh is offering 16 different service-learning courses this summer in locations around the world.

Students who want to study abroad can receive credits while taking service-learning courses that challenge them to apply academic knowledge to real-world situations. These volunteer-oriented courses help students explore global citizenship and build intercultural relationships through community partnership and service.

Amizade is sending students with different academic interests to various countries and areas of the United States, including Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Germany, Poland, Ghana, Grenada, Jamaica, Montana, Navajo Nation, Nicaragua, Northern Ireland, Peru, and Tanzania. Undergraduate and graduate courses are offered in anthropology, education, engineering, English literature, English writing, film studies, history, political science, public and international affairs, and public service.

The Amizade Global Service-Learning Center at Pitt was formed in 1998 through a cooperative agreement with the University. Founded in 1995, Amizade is a nonprofit organization that encourages intercultural exploration and understanding through community driven service-learning courses and volunteer programs.
