Pitt to Present April 7 Colloquium, Healthy Kids: Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention in Our Schools Today
PITTSBURGH—As statistics on childhood obesity climb in the United States, there is increased concern about the health risks these children may face in the future, and perhaps at a very early age.
To address this growing problem, the University of Pittsburgh Signature Series will present Healthy Kids: Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention in our Schools Today from 6 to 9 p.m. April 7 in Alumni Hall's Connolly Ballroom, 4227 Fifth Ave., Oakland. The presentation runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and is preceded and followed by a reception.
Former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann, chair of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, will be joined in this colloquium by John Jakicic, associate professor and chair of Pitt's Department of Health, Physical, and Recreation Education (HPRE), and Deborah Aaron, an epidemiologist and assistant professor in HPRE. Brenda Waters, KDKA-TV anchor and reporter, will serve as moderator.
These experts will discuss such questions as how important is physical activity for adolescents, whether active children become active adults, and what can we do to keep our children healthy and active? Swann will present the current recommendations.
The free event is sponsored by the Pitt Alumni Association, the School of Education, and the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. To reserve a place, call
1-800-258-7488, or visit AlumniEvents@ia.pitt.edu by March 31.
