Pitt to Host Free Conference on Gender Equity in Education and Athletics
PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh will host a two-day conference, Title IX and Gender Equity in Education: The Unfinished Agenda, March 18
and 19 on Pitt's Oakland campus. National experts will gather at the Frick Fine Arts Building and Posvar Hall to discuss the issues surrounding Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits sex discrimination in any federally funded education program or activity. The conference will consider whether Title IX has fallen short in protecting young women and girls from sex discrimination and what strategies are available to achieve equality in education. The event is free and open to the public. The schedule follows.
Thursday, March 18
Frick Fine Arts Building, Schenley Drive
7-8:30 p.m.
Donna Lopiano, executive director of the Women's Sports Foundation, will deliver the keynote address. An athlete, scholar, coach, and author, Lopiano has participated in 26 national championships in four sports and has coached men's and women's volleyball and women's basketball and softball. She is a member of the National Sports Hall of Fame and serves on the U. S. Olympic Committee Executive Board.
